Why I Do This (the short version):
After 9/11, I couldn't stand the thought of someone else risking his life to defend me and my family, so I enlisted to try out for US Army Special Forces (some know us as the "Green Berets").
I spent 2 1/2 years in Special Forces training, and the next 5 years on a Special Forces team. I was privileged to serve, including in combat, with the best in the world. Later, I worked as a Special Forces Instructor, then went on to deploy many times in support of special operations overseas for 7 more years.
Because I was deploying overseas so often, my sweetheart and I were concerned about our family's safety in case of a home invasion, or any other form of intrusion into our home. This was made even worse when we finished our basement, and my beautiful 2 older girls moved into the bedroom there. We knew that if someone tried to get to their room through their window, or the ground-level door, we might not even hear it.
I also realized that the current home defense ideas were fundamentally missing something huge: they don't reflect the reality of today's families, or today's homes. Parents' bedrooms are now usually on the opposite end of the home, or on another floor, from some or all of the kids' rooms.
This means that if we DID have an intruder, they are between me and my children. Even if my wife or I respond with a gun, if we had to shoot, it meant we'd be shooting TOWARD OUR CHILDREN'S BEDROOMS...and walls don't stop bullets.
So, I approached this problem using the mindset and tactics I'd learned as a Special Forces soldier, and later as an Instructor of Special Forces. I developed a plan to lower the risks in defending our home, and increase the opportunities to be much safer.
Using these principles, as a family we sat down and decided what our Family Home Defense Plan was going to be. Everyone had a voice, including the children, and ultimately, EVERYONE knew exactly what to do if we ever had an intruder. We rehearsed it until everyone knew it well.
When our friends heard about what we'd done, and the problems we'd overcome, they wanted the same thing for their families. I have a deep hatred for any situation that puts good people at the mercy of evil, so I was all about helping as many families as possible. I created a training course that allows any person or family to customize their own Home Defense Plan to their own situation, and know they've covered the essential elements. Give me a couple of hours, and you'll leave with a written, custom plan that covers dangers you didn't even know existed. You don't have to have any experience at all, just a desire to be safer and more secure as a family.
I began teaching that course (now called Home Defense Fundamentals) in seminars, classes, and individual homes. Response was fantastic.
When we finally got out of military service completely, I decided to film the course and put it online, so that anyone, anywhere, could learn how to make their family safer and more secure. It's coming soon...and if you give me your email, as I send you free home defense info, I'll also keep you updated on its progress.
Well, that's our story. That's who I am, and the kind of info I'd like to send you. If you still don't want to give me your email address, no hard feelings. Stay Safe!
